Community Transformation

ALF was founded in 1980 based on several assumptions.  We continue to believe that communities will only get better if leaders who have developed significant spheres of influence come together.  We believe that time is needed to develop deep connections and that like-minded people can never accomplish as much as groups that integrate diverse points of view.  Our fundamental principles have evolved over time into five key values:

  • Primacy of relationship;
  • Appreciation, exploration, and inclusion of diversity;
  • Dialogue and collaboration;
  • Service to the common good; and
  • Inner reflection and personal growth.

Our short-term outcomes are based on joining leaders in a year-long Fellows Program to engage in dialogue, explore differences, and build relationships.  ALF strengthens Fellows’ capacity to address public issues collaboratively and builds a strong leadership network to work for positive change in our communities.

Our long-term goal is healthy, vibrant communities.

See individual chapter websites to learn more about how each operates to achieve these goals.
